Paddleboard Rental in the Hamptons, Launched From Your Yacht
Most paddleboard rentals in the Hamptons start on a beach. You carry the board to the water and paddle out from shore. Ours start somewhere else. The boards ride on your charter boat, and you step off the swim platform once your captain drops anchor.
That changes where you can paddle. You aren't stuck on the strip of water in front of a rental shack. Your captain can anchor near Shelter Island in the morning and move to a quieter cove after lunch.
Which boats offer paddleboard rental
Paddleboard rental is available on most of our boats that are 32 feet and longer. We carry standard boards and 4-person group boards. A group board is wide and steady. It works well for kids, couples, or anyone who would rather sit and drift than stand. Ask about boards when you book so the right gear is loaded before you arrive.
Not every large boat carries boards, so tell us your group size and we'll match you with one that does.
Why starting from the boat helps first-timers
The hard part of paddleboarding is usually the first ten minutes. A breeze pushes you sideways. A passing wake knocks you off. Before long you're farther from shore than you planned, and the paddle back is into the wind.
Starting from an anchored boat takes care of most of that. Your captain reads the wind before you leave the dock and picks water on the calm side of an island or point. The boat stays put as your home base. If your legs get tired, you paddle a few strokes back and climb the ladder.
Life jackets and New York rules
New York's life jacket rules cover paddleboards. Every paddler needs a Coast Guard approved life jacket on hand, and children under 12 must wear one. We have life jackets aboard in adult and child sizes, so you don't need to bring your own.
You don't need a boating license to paddleboard. The state's boating safety certificate is for people who drive motorboats. On your charter, the captain does the driving.
What the water feels like
Bay water near Sag Harbor averages about 70 to 72 degrees from July through September. Falling in is part of learning, and in midsummer it's more refreshing than cold. Early in the season, in May and June, the water is cooler, so bring a wetsuit top or keep sessions short.
When you can paddle
Our Hamptons charters run 7 days a week from May 1 to October 15. Morning trips leave at 10:00 am and afternoon trips leave at 2:30 pm. Morning water is often calmer, which helps if this is your first time standing up. On a 4-hour charter, most groups paddle for part of the trip and spend the rest swimming or relaxing on the lily pad.
See every board, float, and toy we carry on our watersports and water toys page, or compare all the gear in our water sports equipment rental service guide. If paddling sounds good, our snorkeling trips pair well with it on the same charter. It's one more way to fill a day on our private yacht charters in the Hamptons.
Frequently asked questions
-
Is paddleboard rental available without booking a boat?
No. Our paddleboards ride aboard a captained charter only. That way you launch from the boat in sheltered water instead of from a crowded beach. Call (631) 500-7777 to add boards to your trip.
-
Do you have paddleboards on weekends?
Yes. Charters run 7 days a week from May 1 to October 15. Weekends and summer months are our busiest times, so ask about boards when you reserve.
-
Can kids use the paddleboards?
Yes. Our 4-person group board is wide and steady, which makes it easier for kids. New York requires children under 12 to wear a life jacket, and we have child sizes aboard.
-
What happens if it's too windy to paddle?
Your captain can look for a calmer cove. If rain or a small craft advisory cancels the trip, you get a rain date to rebook.
